NOTES this page is difficult to digest, by design | straightforward information may be found HERE, following these notes, which are being slowly expanded | certain information may be foundHERE | WHAT IS KIELBASY? | kielbasy, first and foremost, is a degraded form of the word "kielbasa", common in Pennsylvania,
and pronounced "ke-bah-see" | kielbasy is made by my cousins, the sons
of my grandfather's brother, who also made kielbasy | I eat it on
holidays, and some other days, too | kielbasy is an experiment in digestion | kielbasy is an artist residency program, which I describe BELOW | kielbasy is an art of smoke | kielbasy goes well with horseradish | kielbasy tells us something about America |WHAT IS AMERICA?|
america is where the world comes together | america is a way of death,
that calls itself a way of life | america is constantly settled and
unsettled | america
must produce seeds of the earth, but first, america must be discovered
| america must be situated upon Turtle Island | pax
americana is only worthwhile if it the sum of (demilitarization +
honoring the Ancestors + apologies + Manifest Destiny): root the
culture here, miniaturize the whole earth, and take earth to the
stars | like space colonies? | not space colonies, not prisons in a
vacuum, not SETTLEMENTS, not machines with men in them--rather the
whole of earthly life, seeds of earth | "[Space colonies] are
unimaginative. We've done it already. Why play with the idea anymore?
It's a much greater challenge to learn, finally, how to apply our
contemporary scientific inclination to refine our biological
understandings...." | WHAT IS DIGESTION? | "...to
realize that our technologies and all our refinements are crude
compared to what plants and photosynthesis are able to do, or compared
to what takes place in the process of digestion in any body. We should
learn to work with biology rather than to clumsily reconstruct it with
nuts and bolts. In a nutshell, our future options are technocratic
solutions or sophisticated biological solutions. The second, of course,
is obviously right. Biology is preferable to gross technocratic
approaches." --Gary Snyder |
WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH KIELBASY? | at kielbasy, we grow: grow
compost, grow worms, grow soil, grow vegetables, grow fungi, grow
forests | we decivilze, and acculturate | america must be detoxified
| "And nowhere now is there a market for minor produce: a bucket
of cream, a hen, a few dozen eggs. One cannot sell milk from a few cows
anymore; the law-required equipment is too expensive. Those markets
were done away with in the name of sanitation--but, of course, to the
enrichment of the large producers. We have always had to have 'a good
reason' for doing away with small operators, and in modern times the
good reason has often been sanitation, for which there is apparently no
small or cheap technology. Future historians will no doubt remark upon
the inevitable association, with us, between sanitation and filthy
lucre. And it is one of the miracles of science and hygiene that the
germs that used to be in our food have been replaced by poisons"
--Wendell Berry | unclean food becomes safe when eaten with horseradish
|WHAT
IS HORSERADISH? | horseradish is a root, which means it grows
underground, and which means that Mercury showed men how to gather it |
the Oracle at Delphi told Apollo that horseradish is worth its weight
in gold | the root has very little odor until you grate it | mustard
gas | my cousins, the ones who make kielbasy, also make horseradish, by
grating the roots and mixing it with grated beets and salt and vinegar
| Tulelake is the "horseradish capital of the universe" | Tulelake also has Tooley's, or Tule Fog | Horseradish is very similar to wasabi | Tule Lake was also the home to the largest internment camp of Japanese-Americans, during the Second World War | In the same year that I was born, the Tule Lake Committee organized to seek redress for the crimes the War Relocation Authority | In 2008, the President of the United States and Emperor of Guantanamo Bay and Babylon, declared the campsite a "World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument" | "National Monuments" are a variety of pork | WHAT IS PORK? | more on pork to come | and also SMOKING | all these notes will be expanded upon, tending towards a perfect map, a 1:1 scale model of Kielbasy and its environs
STRAIGHTFORWARD INFORMATION ABOUT THE KIELBASY RESIDENCY PROGRAM
KIELBASY ART RESIDENCIES Kielbasy
Art Residencies last for 10 days, including two weekends. Currently,
there is only room for two residents at a given time, but we hope to
have room for additional residents by September. Residents all sleep in
one room, dormitory style. Guest critics will visit during the second
weekend Open Studio. Kielbasy Art Residents will have free use of available tools and materials. All
meals will be provided. Art residents must pay a $100 fee for meals, as
well as a $30 studio fee, for set-up of the studio beforehand.
Work-exchange, in the form of two 6-hour days assisting on building
renovations, can replace the fee.
KIELBASY WORKSHOPS Kielbasy Architecture Workshops will be 4-day design/build programs, intervening in the house at 234 Scott Street. A
